Central Armed forces are short of 83,000 personnel at different posts, Government informed the Parliament.

On Tuesday the Government informed Parliament that there is shortage of more than 83,000 positions in the CAPFs (Central Armed Police Forces), which includes the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force), BSF (Border Security Force), ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police), SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) and Assam Rifles.

As on 1 January 2023, the CRPF is facing a shortage of 29,283 personnel, the BSF is facing a shortage of 19,987 and the CISF is facing a shortage of 19,475 personnel. The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, the current number of vacancies int the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles are 83,127 against total strength of 10,15,237.

On adding further, Rai said

  • CRPF is facing shortage of 29,283, “Out of 29,283, there is a shortage of 278 GOs, 9,687 shortage of subordinate officers, and 19,318 shortages of other ranks”.
  • BSF is facing shortage of 19,987, “Out of 19,987, there is a shortage of 464 GOs, 1,314 shortage of subordinate officers and 18,209 of other ranks”.
  • CIFS is facing shortage of 19,475,” Out of 19,475, there is shortage of 493 GOs, 7,196 subordinate officers and 11,786 other ranks”.
  • SSB is facing shortage of 8,273, “Out of 8,273, there is shortage of 522 GOs, 1,137 subordinate officers and 6,614 other ranks ”.
  • ITBP is facing shortage of 4,443, “Out of 4,443, there is shortage of 322 GOs, 1,114 subordinate officers and 3,007 are other ranks”.
  • Assam Rifles- 44 GOs, 33 subordinate officers, 1,589 other ranks.

Rai also informed Rajya Sabha, Recruitment in the Armed Forces is an ongoing process and is planned to complete it in 2023 through the UPSC, SSC and the relevant forces. The Central Government takes some measures to fill up the vacancies, a decision has been taken to reserve 10 percent of vacancies for ex-Agniveers. Also, time taken in the medical examination has been minimized to speed up the recruitment process, moreover the cut off marks for shortlisting a candidate for Constable/General Duty has brought down to get sufficient candidates.
