In 2013, Sony launched the PS4, and three years later, in 2016, they introduced a high-end PS4 Pro and a slim version of the console. This pattern of releasing an upgraded version of the console with a three-year gap was also observed during the PS3 era, with the launch of the PS3 slim.
Recent discussions have focused on the potential launch of the PS5 Pro and the PS5 Slim. If Sony continues this trend, consumers may expect the release of these consoles in 2023. Additionally, according to the latest report, Sony is actively developing two new consoles.
Both New PS5 Consoles are in Development
Tom Henderson from Inside Gaming reported that Sony is developing two new consoles: a detachable disk drive version of the PS5 (PS5 Slim) and a higher-end PS5 Pro. The PS5 Slim is expected to be a cheaper version of the standard PS5 and is planned to be a rival for Microsoft’s Xbox Series S. It will be made available to the general public with a late 2023 release and is going to cost around $300.
While the PS5 Pro is slated for launch in late 2024. It was reported that Sony has no plans for the PS6 but may begin work on it after 2025.
Sony launched the PS4 in November 2013, followed by the PS4 Pro in November 2016, three years later. Similarly, with the PS5 launching in November 2020, it is expected that the PS5 Pro will be released no later than the end of 2024. However, due to the recent shortage of PS5 supplies, the launch of any new products may be delayed. This supply shortage may also affect the release of the PS6, which is now expected to launch in 2028 instead of 2027.
Some Details about the PS5 Pro
Close sources have disclosed some potential upgrades that may come with the PS5 Pro, as Sony has chosen to keep details of the console away from the public eye. Mark Cerny, who works with Sony, suggested that the company could upgrade the ray-tracing capabilities, improve visuals, and enhance performance and speed. Sony may also be developing a smaller chipset that runs cooler and generates less heat, which would allow them to shrink the console.
However, Cerny did not reveal any more details about the upcoming console, and more information will not be available until next year. It is hoped that the PS5 Pro will offer a significant upgrade over the standard PS5, much like the PS4 Pro did for the standard PS4. Meanwhile, the launch of the PS5 Slim with a detachable disk drive is expected to happen this year, drawing much attention from eager gamers.
