The existing iPhone 14 line-up is great, but they are now a few months old already, and rumors about the upcoming iPhone have started surfacing online. There are still several months before Apple announces their new iPhone 15 line-up, which they usually do in the fall. Therefore, there is plenty of time for rumors to circulate online.
Since there are many suppliers involved, some of whom may leak information about the products, and based on that information it is believed that there will be four iPhone 15 models in the same sizes as the iPhone 14 models. These will include two 6.1-inch iPhones and two 6.7-inch iPhones. One of the 6.1-inch iPhones will be the standard iPhone 15, while one of the 6.7-inch models will be the” Plus” model. The other 6.1 and 6.7-inch iPhones will be higher-end and more expensive “Pro” models.
We are compiling all of the reports and rumors of the upcoming iPhone in one place for your ease. However, it is essential to keep in mind that these are all still just speculations. Nothing is final until Apple confirms it during an official announcement. Nonetheless, the rumors give us an idea of what to expect each year, which can be unfortunate if you like to be surprised. So far, here is everything we know about the iPhone 15!
DESIGN
If rumors are to be believed, then we can accept that all new iPhone models will maintain a similar appearance to the iPhone 14 models, with the pill-and-hole cutout expanding to the entire lineup. As a result, all iPhone 15 models will not have a notch and will instead adopt the Dynamic Island that was introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro models.
Apple will continue to offer four models, including the 6.1-inch iPhone 15, 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro, 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Max, and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max. The “pro” models will come with higher-end features and be more expensive, while the standard iPhone 15 models will be cheaper.
One rumor suggests that the iPhone 15 could measure 6.2 inches instead of 6.1 inches, although it is not clear why Apple would make a change like this. The information is based on a CAD drawing used by case makers to create cases for the new devices, and it is possible that some data may be inaccurate, as such a small difference would not impact case design.
In addition to the Dynamic Island, all iPhone 15 models may come equipped with a more power-efficient OLED display driver chip that’s manufactured on a 28nm process. This would allow for reduced power consumption, which could lead to improved battery life.
Industry insider Ice Universe recently tweeted that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will have the thinnest “bezel black edge” of any smartphone, measuring just 1.55mm. This breaks the record set by the Xiaomi 13 (1.81mm) and is approximately 20% and 30% thinner than the Galaxy S23 and iPhone 14 Pro bezels, respectively.
Although the numbers are small, the bezel size is noticeable due to the continuity break its black edge creates. A scale render created by @Hanstsaiz shows how the new bezel will look:
Apple also plans to tweak the button design in the Pro models of the iPhone 15. The company is planning to adopt solid-state volume and power buttons that resemble the Home button in the iPhone 7 and the Force Touch trackpad on MacBooks. The iPhones currently use mechanical buttons that physically depress, but the solid-state button will employ haptic feedback to simulate the sensation of a button press.
If the addition of solid-state buttons comes to fruition, the iPhone 15 Pro models could be equipped with two additional Taptic Engines on the left and right sides of the device. These two new Taptic Engines would join the existing Taptic Engine.
SPECS
CHIPSET
Apple’s supplier TSMC is expected to build the new A-series chip the A17 for the iPhone 15 Pro models on their next-generation 3-nanometer node. This technology is predicted to boost processing performance by 10 to 15 percent and reduce power consumption by up to 35 percent.
These faster chips will only be available in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, while the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will incorporate the 4-nanometer A16 chip that debuted in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
RAM
Rumors suggest that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will have 6GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM found in the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.
WiFi 6E
The leaked diagrams of the iPhone 15 Wi-Fi chip confirm that Apple is upgrading to Wi-Fi 6E, but they will limit this feature to the iPhone 15 Pro models. The 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will feature Wi-Fi 6E, while the standard iPhone models will continue to use Wi-Fi 6.
Wi-Fi 6E offers more bandwidth compared to Wi-Fi 6, providing faster connectivity speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity. The 6GHz band provides an additional 1.2GHz of the spectrum, allowing for whole-home gigabit coverage and multi-gigabit connectivity for venues. Furthermore, Wi-Fi 6E has enough bandwidth to support higher data streams like those used for AR and VR experiences.
MODEM
Despite rumors that Apple could develop its own in-house modem chips by 2023 but Apple has confirmed that it will continue to use Qualcomm’s 5G modem chips for its 2023 iPhone 15 line-up, as the technology will not be ready until 2024 at the earliest.
All models of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro will utilize the same Qualcomm modem chip, which is expected to be the X70. The X70 chip from Qualcomm provides an improved signal reception, advanced AI for faster processing speeds, lower latency, a wider coverage range, and up to 60% improved power efficiency.
USB-C
Apple is planning to replace the Lightning port on iPhone 15 devices with a USB-C port to comply with new regulations in Europe. Reliable sources, including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, confirm that Apple will adopt a USB-C port for charging purposes.
But there’s a catch, that the USB-C cables to be used have to be MFI certified. Apple supplier Foxconn is already producing MFi-certified accessories like EarPods and cables with USB-C connectors. However, the MFi USB-C certification could be used to limit features like fast charging and high-speed data transfers to Apple-approved accessories.
This transition will enable Mac, iPhone, and iPad users to charge their devices using a single charging standard, which is USB-C. The iPhone 15 Pro models with USB-C ports will support higher-speed data transfers, giving them an edge over the standard iPhone 15 models that will continue to feature USB 2.0 speeds, the same as Lightning.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 15 Pro models will support “at least” USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3, enabling them to transfer video and other file types at much quicker speeds. The use of USB-C in iPhone 15 models will also allow Apple customers to use USB-C accessories certified by the Apple Made for iPhone (MFi) program.
No TouchID Support
Apple is not going to include Touch ID in its upcoming top-end iPhone models, as various leaks previously suggested. Instead, the iPhone 15 line-up will continue to use Face ID, and Apple is working on an under-display Face ID feature that will not be ready until 2025.
CAMERA
It is expected that Apple will use Sony’s latest “state of the art” image sensors for the iPhone 15 models. Sony’s image sensor doubles the saturation signal in each pixel, allowing it to capture more light and reduce underexposure and overexposure. This sensor technology will allow for better portraits and images, even in strong backlighting situations.
Sony uses a semiconductor architecture that separates photodiodes and transistors into different layers, allowing for more photodiodes. It is unclear whether Apple will limit this new sensor technology to the higher-end “Pro” iPhone 15 models or use it across all the models.
Periscope Zoom Lens Technology
Rumors suggest that Apple will be using a periscope lens but it will limit the adoption of a periscope zoom lens to the larger-sized iPhone 15 Pro Max, while the iPhone 15 Pro will have a standard zoom lens, and the iPhone 15 models will be limited to the Wide and Ultra Wide lenses.
With a periscope lens, the iPhone’s zoom capabilities would be significantly enhanced, as the current Pro models are limited to 3x zoom. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple will implement 6x optical zoom technology when it adopts the periscope lens.
A periscope lens reflects light by an angled mirror toward the image sensor in the camera. The directional shift allows for a “folded” telephoto lens system for improved optical zoom capabilities without the blurriness that comes with digital zoom.
COLORS
Apple may offer new magenta and light blue color options for the iPhone 15 line-up, if rumors are to be believed. As is often the case, Apple will likely offer a range of bright color options for the standard iPhone models.
The bright pink and blue shades are expected to be available alongside the standard black, white, and PRODUCT(RED) color options.
